Vancouver College Fighting Irish vs WJ Mouat Hawks

Sat Dec. 3 at 7:00pm, BC Place, Vancouver

The Fanatic spread line:

VC-10 vs WJM+10 O/U 56

Final Score 7-6 for WJM. Well the play was conservative to start as I predicted, problem was that the scoring never picked up. Game came down to the final seconds and was as thrilling a finish as last season.

As for the game particulars. The Hawks were definitely the more nervous of the 2 and fumbled on their first 2 possessions. The Irish went to their bread and butter to Tapia early on but the Hawks were up the challenge forcing 3 and out. Defense prevailed for the entire first half. Both teams struggled to move the ball with consistency. Turnovers and penalties also killed many drives for both teams.

The third quarter came and went in the same fashion as the first 2. The Irish made 1 adjustment going with a lot of Option plays with Martinka, Oliver and Tapia, seemed to work well as they were moving the ball better. The Hawks started to punch it between the tackles with Rau with more consistency (the Irish D-Line started to slow up and injuries became a factor).

The first 6 min of the fourth quarter went according to script. Then the Irish started opening things up and Martinka completed on a fade-right to Oliver for 30 yds to the Hawk 20. Tapia finally busted out to the left side and used his speed to get around the end for the 20 yd scamper. 6-0 Irish. As automatic as McKnight has been all year on converts, the Hawks got a great rush on the right side and blocked the point after (huge play).

With 5:50 min left, the Hawks started on the 20 yd line after a booming McKnight kickoff was unreturnable. Couple of 10-15 yd runs for Rau, a few 3-5 yd QB sneaks for Teer, and a couple of quick slant passes setup the play of the game, 2 min to go. Ball on the Irish 40 yd line, Teer steps back and airs it to the right side. In double-coverage (all night long), Chapdelaine jumps and grabs the ball in mid-air over top of the defender, comes down and runs the 10 yds in untouched for the major, score tied at 6-6. The Hawks make good on the convert, 7-6.

With 1:50 min left, the Irish start from their 30 yd line after recovering a squib kick on the kickoff. They complete a couple of nice passes, Martinka has a couple of solid 3-5 yd runs out of bounds. A couple of nice defensive plays by the Hawks force the Irish to take some timeouts. The Irish make it to the Hawk 30 yd line with 24 sec left. No timeouts, 4th down. They set up hastily, and Martinka sends a hail mary to Oliver in the endzone, Rau intercepts. The Hawks take the knee and run out the clock. Game over, Hawks win 7-6.

Now many people have already started questioning Bernett's decision to NOT kick the FG. Yes, the Irish were in McKnight's range, but remember that the convert earlier was blocked. Would you have faith in your kicking unit after they got blocked from 7 yds out?? And you're trying a FG from 40yds??

It was a tough call, it could've gone either way, Bernett decided to go for the endzone, it didn't work. Would it have been different with the FG?? Maybe, but hindsight is 20/20.

Definitely wasn't an easy game to watch, but both coaching staffs prepared for each other's teams extremely well. Tapia made a great play to get the Irish TD, Chapdelaine did the same for the Hawks. It came down to a blocked convert which is unfortunate, but that's the way football is. Sometimes the ball bounces forwards, sometimes backwards.

Matt Chapdelaine was MVP of the game. A quick look up after "the catch", I could see Jacques Chapdelaine in the corner of my eye, at BC Place not as Coach, but simply Dad. A big grin from ear to ear, the happiest person in the building. The stats won't show it but Teer and Martinka had the game of their young lives. Despite getting harassed all night by the defense, and after a number of unfortunate interceptions, Both Teer and Martinka pressed on and led their respective teams down the field for the final drives. Simply outstanding, the good news is that we hopefully get to see them back next year.

The 2 best teams from day 1 go head-to-head in what is the most anticipated matchup of the year. The Fighting Irish are 8-1 overall with their only loss to Top-ranked Ferndale of Wash State. The Hawks are undefeated at 10-0. Both teams are no stranger to Championship Football and look to add another title to their storied franchises. For the Irish, they've been to the Final game more than you can count in recent years only to come up short. Last year, they came agonizing close only to have Doerksen and the Hurricanes come back and take it in thrilling fashion. For the Hawks, they field their most talented team since the days of Goosen. I expect both teams to start out conservatively early on to feel each other out. Then the scoring should start to pick up. The game could really go either way in this one, but if the game gets close in the 4th quarter, I give the edge to the Hawks.

VC Offense: The Irish showed their versatility last week picking apart the weak Centennial secondary. The O-line was busting huge holes for Tapia to run through all game. The front 5 is probably the most physical line in all of BC High School Football. Tapia is a perfect runner for this offense, extremely shifty and can explode out of the line. The passing game is starting to heat up, Martinka hit up Palma often last week. Oliver and Henderson could be due for a big game.

VC Defense: The D-line toughened up last week and limited the effectiveness of Denton, Hurst and Anderson. The secondary coverage will need to be extra sharp this week to cover the left-side fade with Chapdelaine. It will be interesting if the Irish will go with an aggressive bump-and-run double coverage on Chapdelaine. Needs to have a gameplan to contain Teer in the pocket and keep Rau inside the tackles. A tall task for any defense, however the Irish have the athletes to pull it off.

WJM Offense: Can the 3-headed monster be stopped?? Stop Chapdelaine, Teer and Rau will burn you (saw that vs STM and Holy Cross). The fade right to Chapedlaine has been there all season even with double-coverage. The Hawks also run all kinds of motion before the snap which messes up the defense. Teer is great passing on the run, and on the bootleg. Rau has been solid running both between the tackles and around the ends. You can see why they've been dominating opponents.

WJM Defense: They're a little small on the line, but they have a solid linebacking core. The secondary could use some work but the important thing is that they don't give up big plays. If they can keep The Irish to 3 TDs, they will win.

If VC can stop chapdellaine and teer its over, I know they're gonna dominate rau.

VC also has to be good enough to deal with some of the confusing offensive techniques and shifting that mouat employs

VC is a bunch of arrogant boys who have no idea what they're in for when they play Denis Kelly's men. Just like Mouat showed last year, VC thinks theyre invincible once they're winning. They were up 44-17 versus Mouat in the first round of the playoffs, and Mouat came back to make it 44-37. Mouat is a much better team this year, and VC is in for a surprise. Once again, they make it to the finals but are unable to get the job done. Does that say something about their coach? aka. John Gruden? Mayby its time you give another coach a shot, Chucky.

Arrogant, don't think so. Confident, yes. Actually they're a group of solid young men who have shown nothing but respect for their opponents. You say Mouat is a different team from last year? News flash, so is VC. Sounds like you flunked the entrance exam and you're very bitter.

Flunked the entrance exam. What are you on? Sure sounds like you are one of the team's players' boyfriends. I guess since it is an all boys school you have nothing better to look at then young little high school boys. Nice try, chap.

    Hey Fanatic,

I think people are upset that VC didn't kick the field goals in the first quarter. At the end of the game , on the 40ish was a bit too much. Anyways, a coaching change is necessary. Perhaps, Deslauriers can come in and get the job done!

For information only, back in 2003, WJ Moaut's JV team led by Rau, Teer and Chapdelaine didn't get by the first round of the play-offs! It just proves be successful at Junior Varsity level means nothing. In additon, Windsor's JV team back in 2003, was not that great either!

JUST A QUESTION. HOW MANY OF THE PLAYERS FROM MOUAT WERE ON THAT JUNIOR TEAM FROM TWO YEARS AGO?

Hey good point. Back in 2002 didn't #44 transfer down from someplace up north? Like quensel or something like that?

Went & watched the game live. A real defensive battle by both teams. V C defenitally lost the game due to their own stratigy flaws by not opting for the field goal when they had numerous opportunities on 4th down when they were clearly in their kickers range.....sometimes it goes down like dat........congrats to both teams.

Nope, Craig McEwan was for Sportsnet. Jim and Howard did the Team1040 one. I saw Rintoul on the sidelines for Sportsnet/Team1040.

so minus chapdeline, and teer, and symesters, they have rau, which they wouldve not gotten that far with just rau, vc for instince, almost the exact team as in JR. you do the math, and really ask yourself who recruits for all you doubters on vc football, and why there soo good all the time

vc didnt have toby stroka, or a couple other huge linemans 2years ago

VC didn't have tobi sroka or...who in my opinion is without a doubt the best Defensive line player on that VC team #67...trey henderson is a very gifted athlete...but as a football player #67 takes that cake...comes with it every play and he's a big man who can run

They had chapdeline and teer and symesters two years ago it was just teer was playing wide out and so was chap but rau was playing quaterback and symesters was playing running back.
