2006 AA West Conference Preview

Predicted Finish

1. Windsor Dukes
2. Sands Scorpions
3. Hugh Boyd Trojans
4. Seaquam Seahawks
5. Sentinel Spartans
6. Moscrop Panthers
7. Howe Sound Sounders

Updated. This could be the toughest Conference in all of High School Football in BC. All top 4 teams, Windsor, Sands, Hugh Boyd and Seaquam could all easily be in the top 10. You can't count out Sentinel either.

No question that Windsor will be the top team in 2006 in all of AA. They may not go undefeated, but I expect them to win it all again. Primary reason is Coach Schuman. Nobody prepares his players more than Schuman. The Dukes have enough talent returning to 3-peat easily. Without Ephard, the offense will be more pass oriented using QB Palmer as the centerpiece. The dominance is over, but Windsor will be 2006 AA Champions.

The Sands Scorpions on paper have everything to make a run at the Championship in 2006. They lose only a handful of players to graduation. QB Potkins will lead the way. They will need to find a replacement back for RB Trautman but other than that, the Scorpions will look to pickup right where they left off.

It's really a tie between Hugh Boyd and Seaquam for 3rd in the Conference. Boyd is a solid team with excellent coaching. Seaquam returns most of their players that did make the playoffs this year. Both teams will be in the playoffs, that's for sure.

Sentinel got screwed this season and was unceremoniously dumped off the Playoff bracket. The Spartans will be in full revenge mode with most of their core back as Seniors this year. They had a great passing attack which I expect will only get better in 2006. The Spartans could be poised for a return to the Championship game.

The Moscrop Panthers lose a significant portion of their team to graduation including QB McCann. R Biles is back, but the Panthers will need to find a decent QB to get him the ball. Moscrop is doing a good job to build their program, they should make the playoffs again in 2006.

I'm not sure where they will find the players, but if they do, Howe Sound will likely struggle again in 2006.

This is the first time i think your point of view is wrong bcsportsfan.I dont think windsor will win it. Infact i dont think they will make it to the finals. But, this is simply just my opinion. I do not think I am the only one who thinks this though. Congrats to Windsor for winning 2 years in a row but im almost positive this comming year, someone else will hold the title.

The Sports Fanatic is right on as usual. Windsor will prevail through their coaching and strong key players. They may lose one game along the way, other than that, they will again take it for 2006.

It won't be nearly as easy as the last 2 years, but Windsor knows how to win, bottom line.

Ballenas will be fine on offense as their pass game is usually their strength and they will return to it. The Whalers will spear you in the air if you aint ready for it!!!

The Dukes will have to find someone to fill in the shoes of Gabe Ephard as well as the great O-Line they had... they will be more of a pass oriented team i believe as Bo Palmer and Griffin Bullock return

"Ballenas will be fine on offense as their pass game is usually their strength"

are you serious?? The Whalers have been a ground attack sense they first started the program in 2000, they only had 2 years of throwing with the talented QB Braden Smith... other then that it has been ALL legs from Coleman Larson, Brian Ethier, Tanzil Hudson, and recently Justin Andrushko

yah bcsportsfan, i believe sands will take it this year, but then i see them folding the year after, not even fielding a team. I can see coach U just retiring after and sending as many of his players forward into college or wherever, but i dont see much of sands in the years to come. Simply too small of a school, unless he " recruits " like you all say he does. But i think this is Sands year to take it, i dont think Windsor can win it, sure they might make it in the playoffs and possibly to the semis, but i dont think they will be in the Subway bowl this year.

Exactly. Last year it wasent the coaching. It was the crazy running back and experianced O-line that made them win. They wont be shit next year.

No way Windsor will be ranked ahead of Sands when the Province rankings come out. Who does Windsor have coming back? I seriously want to know. All of their studs are graduating. Schuman and staff are great coaches but they Sands has more guys coming back (including Tyson Pencer who was hurt for almost all of last year) and Uyeyama is a damn good coach too. Can't wait to see it play out on the field though. Glad that they are matching up in the same conference.

between schuman and windsors athletes, they will most likely again take #1. the coaching is excellent and the key players are studs. no bragging just honesty they are so comitted and dedicated, hard to match that

  • At 12:24 AM, March 09, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

What coach doesnt have dedication and commitment. That's the coaches coach. Extra dedication and commitment doesnt bring more wins. If coach Schuman went and coached Aldergrove would they have more wins?
    NO

  • At 6:06 AM, March 09, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

They would have a couple of more wins. They wouldn't win it all, but they had a few good players and they were the worst coached team in the league. They would be 100 times better with a good coach.

I think Moscrop and Sentinel will be better than Seaquam. Biles might be the best player in the province this year and Sentinel should have made the playoffs if not for paying fees.

    From BC Highschool Forum:

there is alot being said about the fact that the sands football program could be banned next year, i dont really believe into that, due to the fact they've already played one year so even if they had recruited which i believe they did its been a year so its over now, and now dont complain cuz they did not win the title windsor did, so therefore noone needs to be scared, will they be banned next year, any opinions? they should have a good team next year, in my obersvation i dont have any choice of who will win next year because it is a new season, but sands mt.dough and mission should be strong programs,

    opnions..

Sands does not have everything to get the title. Im pretty sure they can get a decent running back but they do not have an O-Line!!! Whoevers says there good or even half decent is lying. There straight out horrible. If anyone of those baboons starts O-Line next year they will get there QB killed

  • At 5:26 AM, March 24, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

They had an all grade 11 o line last year and they were pretty good so I think they will be pretty good this year.

i doubt that, sands will run away with this conference and likely the AA title, and no i dont play for sands, its just quite obvious. their team was grade 11 STOCKED, basically truatman was hte only impact grade 12 from what ic ould see the rest were juniors and a couple BIG juniors in the backfeild too.

I don't agree with you about Boyd. They lost in the quarters last year, Sands made it to the semis. Not sure about Boyd, but Sands has almost their whole team coming back from last year, who does Boyd have coming back? Even if it is their whole team, how can you justify placing them ahead of Sands if Sands did better last year. Please give a rational reason why.

  • At 9:31 PM, April 03, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I think that Sands coaches will be banned and without them, they will be deflated and mediocre.

Boyd will have the Haddow's to lead the way

The Haddows are garbage. These guys were gophers for Coach Schuman, at Richmond High in the 1990's. The Haddow's main job at Richmond was to fill the water bottles. Please don't consider Bill or Bruce Haddow in the same league with Coach Schuman or that Ueyama guy at Sands!

Apparently Sands is playing in the NFC West this year and is already in trouble with tampering with players from other NFL Franchises.

They of course deny it as it is all in the spirit of giving young people the opportunity to play and North Delta is realigning its school system. Sean Alexander wants the experience of playing for Coach U. I guess the latest recruiting dinner was a huge plus in bringing Alexander to Canada!! NFL commisioners are at their wits end.

  • At 8:51 AM, April 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

No, the function of the BC High School Football executive is not to ban teams. They are an organizational body for the league. It sounds like they are working very hard to make it their function, however, the decision must ultimately come down to the BCSS. BCSS requires tangible proof that Sands violated the rules. Tangible proof does not include rumours and complaints on web discussion forums. There is a limit to the power of the BC High School Football executive, and there have been rumours of the executive invoking means well beyond their intended scope of authority to aid them in their goals.

If rumours and anecdotal evidence were acceptable grounds to ban a team, then quite soon there would be no team playing high school football in BC. For example, there are plenty of rumours of the number of players on Frank Hurt from outside their catchment area that were recruited from North Surrey and Fleetwood Community Football. Coincidentally, Mike Biggin, head coach of Frank Hurt, is the acting Registrar on the BC High School Football executive. This arrangement would facilitate the transfer of players into Frank Hurt much easier than other schools. However, this is not tangible evidence to have the program banned.

    Bull Shytzer

If anything this would make them the cleanest team out there. Just becuase the registrar is your Head Coach doesnt mean that he has extra powers and that things are gonna slide through in their favor.

The teams that get noticed or busted are the teams that bend the rules or find the loop holes and cheat. It is BC School Sports that will still make that decission.

When I played for South Delta, my Head Coach (Coach Higgins) was the registrar. It the same boat with a different driver.

Sorry Sands. Deflections arent gonna help you this time.

okey Sands, can you really walk around with your heads held up, knowing as everyone does that yu are a team of cheaters. yu could at least own up to your cheating ways and act like real football players. the other teams earn their games the decent way. nothin honorable about liars and cheaters. Booooooooooo .

  • At 5:49 AM, April 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Birna Higgins did the same thing with players who transferred from Ladner, so you're statements about the same boat and different driver are correct but not in the way you intended.

  • At 8:48 AM, April 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Wrong

Any Team whose Head Coach, past or present, VOLUNTEERING all the extra hours to coordinate collecting the 1000's of registration forms MUST be as transparent as the next team.

The registrar has zero time to check the validity of these 1000's of players registrations that their teams submit. A registrars main purpose is making sure the I's are dotted the T's are crossed and most importantly that teams have paid so they are not left out of the playoff format like Sentinel did for being in poor registrative standing.

The only reason that Sands is under investigation is due to the half a dozen odd complaints submitted by coaches of AAA and AA teams across BC (not based on forum or BLOG discussions or rumours)

The executive MUST follow through on these complaints. The registrar, being the person with the info required for an investigation is the obvious person to head up and process the info in a complaint, that is then presented to BC School Sports for the final say.

I agree with many of the comments above (For and Against Sands).

There is no reason to slag Sands and there is no reason to stand up for them either as all of this BLOG info is hearsay.

The complaints have been made. The investigation is complete. It is now in BC School Sports hands and they will make the decission.

    Past Registrar

Why would anyone have a beef over something like that. Kids transfer and move all the time. No coach has control over that. It is a part of life.

Look at what Past Registrar says. This is based on a bunch of complaints from AAA and AA coaches

I know this is going back a bit, but I can't let it pass.

"The Haddows are garbage. These guys were gophers for Coach Schuman, at Richmond High in the 1990's. The Haddow's main job at Richmond was to fill the water bottles. Please don't consider Bill or Bruce Haddow in the same league with Coach Schuman or that Ueyama guy at Sands!"

In case you're not aware, buddy, Schuman played for the Haddows on a Richmond High team that went to the BC final in the 80s. Schuman and Bruce Haddow are good friends to this day; they keep in touch regularly and talk football all the time. Haddow taught Schuman much of what he knows today. Do you still think the Haddows are garbage? Yeah didn't think so.

How would I know? I played for both of them, that's how.

Admittedly I know nothing about Coach U, but chances are no coach in BC even considers himself to be above or below another coach, or "in the same league" as anybody. The fact remains that these men are giving up their spare time to give you, the very boys who slag them from the safety of your own keyboards, a chance to play a little ball. Why do you judge them so?

And don't think I'm just sticking up for my friends Schuman and the Haddows. Rob Stevenson works tirelessly on the Vancouver Island web site, and he serves as the Island's football ambassador, let's face it. Kevin Watrin moved from Rick Hansen, where he won a JV championship, to Mission, to have a varsity team of his own, to start a new program. Walter Becker was named national coach of the year a few years ago; that kind of thing doesn't happen by accident to anyone.

These men labour out of love. Know that you look stupid when you slag them. Go ahead and slag me for my words too; I'm sure it'll be very witty and worth my while to hear.

  • At 9:06 AM, April 16, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Hold on a second here, you lost all credibility with one statement: Walter Becker was named national coach of the year. First off this never happened and never ever would happen. How do I know? I played for him. He is not a very good football coach, that is the most polite way I can put it and I will leave it at that.

Maybe you are referring to Coach U who was a finalist in 2001 (I think it was that year) for the national coach of the year while at North Delta. It was the same thing that Farhan Lalji and Dennis Kelly have been finalist for, the one where you are nominated by your former players who play college. As for giving credit to all the other coaches, they are all deserving and have given up countless hours of free time to spend teaching young men a great game and they should all be commended for that. To throw Walter Becker's name in the mix when you are talking about all AA coaches and mention Walter Becker as having won the national coach of the year was more than a little weird and kind of ruined the validity of your post. I am not going to personally attack you for it, but sounds like you have a good understanding of the history of coaches so it is a little mind boggling why you would throw out a ridiculous statement like that.

It must have been coach U. My bad. Didn't have my facts straight on that one. Incidentally, Bruce Haddow was runner-up this past year.

But it's good to hear that somebody feels my words have merit. As I'm sure you can appreciate, I was trying to get a point across to the jokers who do little else but insult the coaches of BC. While I got the wrong name, I'd hope that the fact that ANYBODY from BC was anywhere close to getting this honour would be enough to prove my point: that these boys should shut their holes.

I completely agree that everyone should stop dissing the coaches, they deserve much better and often deserve our praises. Congrats to Haddow for his accomplishment.

I find that hard to swallow. From what I gather, in the HS ranks, if your program is not recruiting then you are not trying?
Why have rules. Think of the kid who practiced all those HS years and even before HS and then get blown out of the water by a team that was recruited. Where is the dream in that.

    DUKES 4 LIFE !!!!!!!!
2 years in a row suckas....put either dukes team against any team in AA or even AAA and they got a great chance of winning....this year the DUKES r young and a 3-peat is possible if they want it shuman will make them the best players they Want to be its up to the kids if they want to go all the wat...but the year after that in 07 they will all be returning again so they will for sure be winning it all in 07 again if they dedicate all there time during season and during the off-season likes the past championship winning teams have done....

Saaaaaaannnnnnnnnddddddddddddssssssssss your cheatin caught up with you at long last. After all the lies, deceptions and "I didn't know the rules" malarkey your coach got his and your program suffers the fallout.

Justice is slow but in the end it won on this one.

Go suck on a lemon cheaters.
