The 0-5 record does not reflect the level of play the West Vancouver Highlanders showed last season. The Highlanders started the season strong with an impressive, hard fought 33-18 loss to Vancouver College. With the exception of a blowout vs Handsworth, the Highlanders were in every game they played in 04/05 and with an extra catch here, a QB sack there, the Highlanders could've won 1 or 2 games. Talent was not a problem for the 04/05, the Highlanders fielded several skilled players in the skilled positions such as QB Ian Noble and TB Gordie Sawers. The lack of big game experience for both the players and coaches were contributing factors to the lack of wins.

The Highlanders needed a change for 05/06 and so they recruited new Head Coach Jeremy Conn to come in to take the program to the next level. Coach Conn is no stranger to BC High School Football helping Rob Stevenson create the Barsby Football program on the Island. Conn went on to coaching stints at Centennial, New West, and High School Football in Ontario before coming back full circle to head the Highlanders program for 05/06. Conn will have a lot of work to do as the talent that existed last year has graduated including QB Ian Noble, TB Gordie Sawers and FB/LB Matt Lytle. Last year's JV squad didn't exactly light up the season either finishing 0-6.

Piece together what was left of the Juniors with a bunch of rookies that struggled against rookies, and the 05/06 season will be one to look past for the Highlanders. I don't doubt that Coach Conn will light a fire under these kids and bring a new level of energy. But ultimately, the players are still the ones that have to go out and make plays. Unfortunately, I don't see this team making many plays. Building a good program takes time, hopefully the Highlanders are patient and give Coach Conn the freedom and time he deserves.

Prognosis: 0-5 (Will come close vs Carson)
